Aluminum brings a rare combo: lightweight, corrosion resistance, formability, and great thermal/electrical conductivity—and it recycles extremely well.
Sustainability snapshot
~75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use. Beverage cans can go from recycling bin to new can in < 60 days in the U.S. Aluminum Association+1
Alloy families (what the four digits mean)
Two major buckets:
Non-heat-treatable (strength via cold work):
- 1xxx (nearly pure Al): top conductivity/corrosion.
- 3xxx (Mn): very formable for panels.
- 5xxx (Mg): marine-friendly strength & corrosion resistance (e.g., 5052/5083/5086).
Heat-treatable (solution heat treat + aging; tempers start with T):
- 2xxx (Al-Cu): high strength; aerospace.
- 6xxx (Al-Mg-Si): versatile & weldable (6061, 6063).
- 7xxx (Al-Zn-Mg): very high strength (7075 family).
Temper = how it was strengthened
- H-tempers (e.g., H32): strain-hardened (non-heat-treatable).
- T-tempers (e.g., 6061-T6): heat-treated/aged for high, stable strength.
Finishes at a glance
Mill (as-rolled), painted/primed, anodized (engineered oxide for wear/corrosion & color control), tread/diamond and embossed textures.
Popular aluminum use cases
- Marine & coastal: boat hulls, docks, gangways—5xxx alloys like 5052/5086/5083 for corrosion resistance.
- Frames, fixtures & structural components: 6061-T6 for a strong, weldable, all-round pick (machine frames, jigs, trailers, ramps).
- Architectural extrusions: windows, curtainwall, handrails—6xxx series (6063/6061).Aluminum Association
- Heat exchange: radiators/heat sinks (high conductivity).
- Transportation: truck/marine frames, ladders, toolboxes (6061 angles/plate). Aluminum Association
